The Land of 10,000 Lakes. The home of the Twin Cities. The North Star State. You can describe the state of Minnesota in a lot of ways. Sharing its northern border with Ontario and Manitoba, Minnesota isn’t just the northernmost state in the Midwest. Thanks to the Northwest Angle, it’s the most northern of all states in the Continental US (which excludes Alaska and Hawaiʻi). The state got its name from the Dakota people who used the term for the Minnesota River.
The state took the stage during the 2024 Esri User Conference. As governor Tim Walz delivered remarks during the plenary session, he was illuminated by a gorgeous map of Minnesota. More than an ordinary map, the design features core elements of the state’s history and identity. From farming, dairy, and native wildlife to its vibrant cities, outdoor recreation, and commitment to clean energy, the map is replete with symbolism.
"It may not look like it, but there was indeed some GIS involved in creating the map. While never sure what exactly to call myself, I do know that I have a generalist skillset, so I try to use all areas of my expertise to accomplish tasks in the most efficient manner.”
Beginning with a sketch, Davison laid out key elements of illustration, fitting each within a layout matching the final display specifications. Color, detail, and geographic accuracy finalize the piece.
Cartography is the “art and science of graphically representing” a place. Sometimes maps lean more toward science. Sometimes they reflect an artistic expression. Davison’s map expertly threads the needle, using scientific tools to produce an incredible and inspirational piece of art.
It is almost as magnificent as Minnesota itself.
