Where Are the Gaps in Electric Vehicle Chargers along US Interstates?

As electric vehicles (EVs) become popular, questions about their range and reliability remain. Drivers worry they’ll run out of battery on extended trips with no charging station nearby. The good news is there’s a map for that.

This animated map from Esri confirms and disproves those concerns about range anxiety. How? As the map shows, it all depends on where you live.

The map highlights EV charging stations near freeways to show the existing network. As the video plays, you can see the longest dead zone in each state along the highlighted road. It’s useful—and surprising. California leads all states with 13,658 charging stations but has two of the longest dead zones on the map.

Solving range anxiety isn’t just about having a high number of EV charging stations. They’ve got to be in the right places, too, from both an equity and efficiency perspective. The funding is coming. But for EVs to reach their potential, figuring out the “where” is just as critical. This map provides a great initial look at where we can do better.

Longest dead zone along I-40 in miles (from Yermo to Needles in California).
0.02
Charging stations per electric vehicle in New Jersey, the lowest ratio in the US.
